This story is one of many that upsets me so much. This is leaders of "family" and "Christian" faith that wants to remove laws that protect against hate crimes? How can anyone claiming to represent family and representing a God that the Bible says is "Love" not only fail to support such laws, but also fight to keep them from being laws.
I strongly feel that it is actions such as this that is giving justification for the crimes that are being committed against the LGBT groups. Our government does not give LGBT equal rights (rights owed to our entire human family according to our Declaration of Freedom) and the church wants to remove hate crimes laws. So even those that believe in a higher power and are giving justification to the crimes.
Now I know some will argue that they are simply not wanting those groups to have additional protection, but they did not request the hate crime laws be removed from any other group protected only LGBT.

There should be no hate crimes law. A crime should be judged no differently simply because of your lifestyle preference. This law prohibits and restricts Christians from preaching the word of God. If this law is upheld then Christians will be punished for their religious beliefs. The first amendment prohibits the making of any law prohibiting free speech to include impeding the free exercising of religion. It is unfortunate that people are attacked for their lifestyle but no law should protect someone over another.
That I can accept as justification for their actions, but they only targeted LGBT community. They are not saying that everyone should be deemed equal in the eyes of the law, but that attacking a LGBT based off of hate should not be part of the law.
I support hate crime laws. So we differ in opinion on that, but if they had of said as you did, no hate crime laws, everyone treated equally, I would be okay with it. But they did not....only LGBT. They do not want people getting stricter penalties for the hate crimes against LGBT. If LGBT is removed from protection under this law and the gay panic defense stands (which actually already takes LGBT out from under the hate crime laws) then crimes against LGBT will definitely increase.
